5 top tips to make the best of your break

Winter sports are a fantastic way to blow away the cobwebs in the winter season, with breaks for couples, families or groups available. There’s a winter break to suit everyone this season, whether you’re looking for relaxing break or an adrenaline filled ski-a-thon.

Whatever you chose to do while you’re away, it’ll be a great time to put office politics and the school run behind you for a week or two, and focus on cold noses, warm fires and making holiday memories!

1. Dress well…
It’s always cold in winter, right? Not always - if you’re travelling in late winter/spring you might not need quite as may layers as you’d think. You will need high factor sunscreen though and lots of it, whatever the weather!
Don’t forget to pack some evening wear to, you won’t want to eat in your salopettes!

2. Get ahead…
Take a few lessons in the UK before you go, if you can. Just a few lessons can make a huge difference to confidence, especially if you’re travelling with children or beginners. The ability to stand up right and stop at will, is sure to make your first few hours on the slopes much nicer ones.

3. Headgear…
Helmets aren’t compulsory for adults in most European resorts but, while they’re not quite as fetching as a well-coordinated bobble hat, they could prevent serious injury, so we’d recommend that you wear one. Children under 14 will be asked to wear helmets and should be compulsory in ski schools and nursery slopes.

4. Know before you go…
It’s worth spending an hour checking out what your chosen resort can offer by way of clothing and equipment hire.
If your tour operator offers excursions and trips, are they competitively priced? There’s no use spending more than you need to.

5. Make sure you’re covered…
Winter sports often need specialist insurance, so it’s important that you understand what cover you’ll need for you and your loved ones. Medical Travel offer winter sports insurance from a panel of insurers, meaning we’ve got products to suit everyone. Click here for a quote.

If you don’t fancy skiing or snowboarding for the whole time, there’s plenty to do off the slopes…

Thrill seeker? Give dog sledding a go, all you need to do is hold on and enjoy the ride, while watching a snowy wonderland whizz by…
If you fancy a little more speed, snowmobile safari could be for you. You’ll be taken off the beaten track of the slopes and allowed to open the throttle across the open snow.

Feeling energetic? How about Snow Shoeing, this wintery version of a hike is available at many resorts. You’ll benefit from your guides knowledge of the local trails, as well the chance to ask questions about the resident flora and fauna.

Rest and relax: Find yourself an open fire and settle down with a novel of your choosing – partake in a few local dishes and treat yourself to a hot chocolate with all the trimmings – bliss!

If you’d like to add a bit more decadence to your trip, many resorts have day spas for you to while away the hours in or perhaps a hot stone massage? – Spoil yourself, you’re on holiday after all…
