Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens your bones, making them fragile and more likely to break. This can be particularly dangerous while you are travelling and standard travel insurance tends to exclude cover for pre-existing medical conditions, and this can include osteoporosis. If you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, you will need to disclose it when applying for travel insurance to ensure that you are covered for your trip. For travel in Europe, you should also ensure that you have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
A travel insurance policy which covers osteoporosis offers you protection in the event of any complications relating to your osteoporosis whilst on holiday. You would be able to access a 24 hour emergency medical assistance line, with operators fluent in many languages who can speak to medical staff wherever you are. Expenses such as ambulance and hospital admission costs, and repatriation to the UK, also tend to be covered by the medical expenses section of a policy. Cancellation cover would mean that if you were deemed unfit to travel before your holiday, for reasons relating to complications of your osteoporosis, you would be entitled to make a claim. Please be aware that different insurers offer different levels of cover, and you should check the cover limits of the policy prior to purchase.
Depending on the type of osteoporosis you have, you may find it difficult or expensive to obtain cover if you are under investigation, or awaiting treatment. Once treatment is complete or after diagnosis, it can, but not always get easier for you to obtain travel insurance however you will certainly need to declare the condition if you want any medical cover. Please do speak to your doctor prior to making any travel arrangements.
