Standard travel insurance tends to exclude cover for pre-existing medical conditions, and this can include tonsillitis even though it isn't usually a serious condition. If you have been diagnosed with tonsillitis, you will need to disclose it when applying for travel insurance to ensure that you are covered for your trip. For travel in Europe, you should also ensure that you have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
A travel insurance policy which covers tonsillitis offers you protection in the event of any complications relating to your tonsillitis whilst on holiday. You have access to a 24 hour emergency medical assistance number, with operators fluent in many languages who can speak to medical staff wherever you are. Additional costs such as ambulance and hospital admission expenses, and repatriation to the UK, also tend to be covered by the medical expenses section of your policy. Cancellation cover means that if you were deemed unfit to travel before your holiday, for reasons relating to complications of your tonsillitis or any included linked conditions, you would be entitled to make a claim. However please be aware that different insurers offer different levels of cover, and you should check the cover limits of the policy prior to purchase.
Depending on the cause of your tonsillitis, it doesn't tend to be too difficult to to obtain travel insurance however you will certainly need to declare the condition if you want medical cover for it or any related condition that may occur while travelling. It is always a good idea to talk to your doctor regarding any conditions you may have prior to making any travel arrangements.
